I’ve been following Carvana and can’t believe what has transpired–especially in light of my own bad experience with them, which led me to short a small position. My experience may be unique with them, but if it’s pervasive, then problems are under the hood. My experience:

  1. I was not allowed to look at the car without having to buy it (it was in my local market)
  2. I had a chat with them to discuss my concerns, but was not able to have them addressed before committing to the purchase
  3. I picked up the car, which was a beauty, but 5 miles into the ride, it stalled out on me on a route 95 bridge. It restarted and stalled out again, I was fortunate to get off the highway and home. It repeatedly did this over the next 2 days.
  4. The good news is that you have a week to return the car and get a refund.
  5. If I wanted to keep the car, I would have to utilize their warranty program which has a cost and of course I’d be without a car for the repairs.

Summary:
Their presale inspection is not to be trusted–my car should never have been offered for sale with the safety problem it clearly had
They charge a significant premium, which given my experience is not justified nor sustainable
You can’t view the car or test drive it without purchasing it. I don’t think that’s sustainable over the long haul.
In some cases they have a significant shipping charge. This complicates the overall value/cost proposition and adds to the anxiety of buying a car sight unseen.
The warranty, while providing some comfort under normal circumstances provides no comfort if the car isn’t suitable from the start. It should be a no cost service with a temp rental if their car fails within the first 90 days or so. I may have kept the car if they were committed to seeing me through what was a bad situation. I think they use 3rd parties for the inspections and there may be an accountability issue there.

In any event, I don’t see me buying the stock at any price. I will not short it either, given its momentum.

Thanks for the opportunity to share thoughts, please let me know if you have any, thanks!
