I have been selling naked puts for over 20 years. I do only one or two puts at a time so my trading is small. I have had monthly profits of over $4K and have had only three monthly losses all less than $500. However this month might be the fourth loser.

You do need to learn to manage positions that are about to be assigned. Buying back the put is the simplest but almost always the most expensive. I have found that taking the assignment is usually best. Sometimes the stock goes back up and you sell it at a profit or you can sell a call at the price you were assigned or even a bit higher turning your naked put into a covered call. I usually end up adding to the premium collected on the original put sale by doing this.

BTW You can blame me for the two recent losses in your RUT service. After watching for awhile I made my first transaction the November 14th trade so it was me that jinxed you. However, I know I will profit long term and am sticking with it.

So I just gave up on it.

First of all, it is against the law to sell naked puts from within a tax-advantaged account, such as an IRA, Roth IRA, or 401-K plan. Since all of my investments are within IRAs, as is true for many folks, I can’t sell naked puts. Secondly, selling naked puts is an EXTREMELY risky move. You could lose a lot of money if the price of the underlying stock goes down a lot. The income that you receive from selling the put is minimal, compared with the price of 100 shares of the underlying stock. If the stock goes down a bunch, you would have to pay the difference between what 100 shares of the stock cost when you first sold the put, and what is when you bought to close it (or when it expired). Am I wrong? Maybe I just don’t understand how it works, but that’s what I’ve come to understand.
